Restaurant l'Havana. Cuina catalana i de mercat: Reviews & Ratings
Was actually pointed here by Ca L’Estevet when the hostess could see we were put off by the long reservation queue. Silly Americans just trying to walk in! Haha. It is what it is - they are a tiny restaurant with a big reputation. But if formal service, a historic dining room, and waiters in starched white, high-collared jackets aren’t hard requirements, L’Havana does just fine! To us, the most important is the taste of the food and fair value. And L’Havana scores full marks on both. We were looking for classic and traditional - hence Ca L’Estevet - and L’Havana offered both with the fricando and the tripe stew. Beautiful, simple, honest, rib-sticking food without any superfluous “fancy.” Pricing was also fair, in-line with other neighborhood spots we’ve been to, sans the tourist markup of 50%ish at Ca L’Estevet. Our kind of spot. A great and happy find. Highly recommended.
Good food, the peppers stuffed with cod and in a cheese sauce was delicious (pictured), not as convinced about the calamari, but the Creme Catalan (Crème Brūlée) was so good! Was empty when I got there at 9pm on a Saturday, was about half full by 10pm.
Intimate little restaurant with wholesome local Catalan fare. Squid balls are recommended.

Nestled in the heart of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella, Restaurant l'Havana. Cuina catalana i de mercat offers an authentic dive into Catalan culinary tradition. This modest yet vibrant eatery on Carrer del Lleo serves market-driven dishes that carry the soul of Catalonia with every bite. Far from pretentious, it champions honest, home-cooked flavors that connect you to the region's heritage.
The menu is a heartfelt collection of classics that invite you to explore the rich textures and tastes unique to this cuisine. Standouts like Mandonguilles Amb Sípia (meatballs stewed with cuttlefish) and the rustic Fricandó con Setas (veal stew with mushrooms) showcase the marriage of earthy mushrooms and tender proteins — simple yet deeply satisfying. Not to miss are the Calamars Farcits, packed with traditional fillings that balance tender calamari with rich, savory nuances.
Dishes such as Carxofa i Aubergínia Arrebossades (breaded artichokes and eggplants) and Butifarra amb Monxetes (Catalan sausage with white beans) echo the home-style cooking praised by patrons, conjuring a warm, familial atmosphere akin to a grandmother’s kitchen. The flavors here are unforced, unadorned — they let the quality ingredients and time-honored recipes take center stage.
Equally impressive is the dessert selection. The Crema Catalana, a regional gem akin to custard brûlée, offers a silky texture crowned with caramelized sugar, a perfect sweet counterpoint to savory dishes. The Helado de Turrón delivers a cool nutty finish, ideal after a hearty meal.
What resonates most is the genuine approach the kitchen takes. As echoed in reviews, you won’t find grandiose silver service or elaborate plating, but rather honest, flavorful cooking that respects tradition. The fair pricing reflects the neighborhood’s spirit — accessible without tourist markups, ensuring the experience remains authentic.
In essence, Restaurant l'Havana is a culinary embrace of Catalonia’s market bounty and deep-rooted recipes. It’s a place that values substance over style, where each dish tells the story of local ingredients and simple hospitality. For lovers of traditional Catalan fare, this quiet gem confidently stands as a beacon of taste and sincerity in Barcelona’s bustling food scene.
